Batman's DC Origins: The Full Story

Batman was created in 1939 in direct response to the commercial success of Superman. National Comics Publications — the predecessor to DC Comics — had launched Superman in Action Comics #1 the previous year and had seen enormous sales. They wanted more superhero characters to fill their expanding comic book line, and Bob Kane was commissioned to create one.

Kane's initial design was heavily influenced by several sources: a Leonardo da Vinci sketch of a bat-winged flying machine, the 1930 film The Bat Whispers, and Bela Lugosi's portrayal of Dracula. The Dark Claw: When Batman Met Wolverine

In the 1996 Amalgam Comics crossover — a jointly published non-canon project between DC and Marvel — Batman was merged with Marvel's Wolverine to create a character called the Dark Claw.
